Participation marks company’s entry in international-level events
The Santos Port Authority (SPA) has participated, between November 19 and 21, of the XXVIII Latin American Congress of Ports, of the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA), an alliance of US, Canadian, Caribbean, and Latin American ports.
The participation of Port of Santos at the congress marks the entry of SPA in events of significant international expression, and established a greater bond of the company with several worldly expressive institutions such as the Organization of American States (OAS), the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB) and the International Association of Ports and Harbours (IAPH).
During the Latin American reunion, Santos was chosen as the city that will host the AAPA Latin American event in 2021. The next one, in 2020, will happen in Cartagena, Colombia. The Santos edition will be the largest event by the Latin American branch of AAPA.
SPA held a joint stand with the Ports of Paraná in the congress. The structure allowed meetings to take place, with the notable highlight of one with Port of Rotterdam’s international director Rene van der Plas, beside several informal consultations about the port authority’s destatization process.
SPA’s head of international affairs, Raquel Kibrit, who was part of the Port Authority’s delegation, notes that the opportunity provided an excellent level of exposition with highly qualified, decisive global players, as well as consolidated among them the leadership of Santos as the foremost Latin American port, besides serving as a platform for the formalization of its association to AAPA.
Also part of the SPA delegation were the manager for strategic planning Roberto Paveck Pinheiro, directory board advisor Augusto Almudin, and the foreign trade expert Andrea Citron.
Brasil participated in panels discussing port projects in Latin America, large-scale ports, and a round table with ship owners and port terminals. In the opportunity, Disney Barroca Neto, general coordinator for the modeling of port tenancies, was elected second vice-president of AAPA’s Latin American delegation.

About Santos Port Authority
Santos Port Authority is a public company connected to the Ntaional Port and Waterway Secretariat (SNPTA) of the Ministry of Infrastructure (MINFRA). It is responsible for the logistic planning and for the administration of the Organized Port of Santos’ infrastructure, the largest of Latin America, through which almost a third of the Brazilian trade balance is moved. With 7,8 million square meters, the port is located 70 Km from the metropolitan region of São Paulo, and contains 43¹ maritime and retroport terminals, distributed among the municipalities that make the two margins of the port’s estuary: Santos (right) and Guarujá (left).
¹Some terminals operate two types of cargo, and have therefore been considered in duplicity.
